“This is a powerful recording. Max McLean presents the gospels and letters of St. Paul as living history. The voice of Jesus is very human: reflective, exasperated, commanding and anguished. Above all, the voice of Jesus conveys authority…these are not academic or reflective readings. McLean’s voice is clear and present. He conveys excitement and conviction which sweeps the listener into the heart of the Word of God.” AudioFile Magazine, The Audiobook Review

I've been listening to the NIV Audio Bible for over 25 years and have used 5 versions extensively during that period. Bill Pearce, Steven Johnson, and two very diverse dramatized versions, including sound effects. But by far my favourite is this one by Max McLean. A flawlessly deep, resonant voice with a combination of focus, dignity, and masculine energy that seems almost ideally appropriate to reading God's Word. The music is extremely passive, almost inaudible, giving only the slightest background continuity of tone, never even remotely taking the focus away from the words themselves. McLean's pacing is excellent, leaving the listener plenty of time to think and/or pray along with the words while never lagging, which can cause disengagement. The imprecatory Psalms, Lamentations, the Song of Songs, genealogies, history, didactic passages: McLean's consistent style somehow manages to avoid interfering with or influencing how the Scripture is heard. Having been ingesting the NIV 1984 all along I am grateful to the Lord to be able to continue to hide his word in my heart in the translation I am most familiar with and have worked on for so long.

Very Good audio version. McLean conveys the meaning very effectively.

Max McLean isn't a monotone reader. He's also not so dramatic that his performance is distracting. He hits it just right. I just started a one hour commute to my new job. I've always struggled with dedicating daily time to read the Bible. I've now been listening to the Bible two hours a day while I drive. I've gone from Genesis to Joshua in a few weeks. This is the first time I've gone through the Old Testament quickly enough that I can remember the previous books. I'm amazed at how much repetition and connectivity there is in the first five books.

I have very much enjoyed listening to Mr. McLean's narration of the Bible. The added benefit of his intonation brings the readings to life and makes the experience much more meaningful.

Having the Bible on my computer and ipod has made it much easier to 'read' the Bible. I find that listening to the Bible instead of reading it myself makes it quicker and easier to understand, whereas, reading it from a book I found myself re-reading passages over and over trying to understand what is written. Occasionally I find myself getting distracted while listening, and it is very easy to just replay the chapter so that nothing is missed. I have a long commute to work, and I find listening to the Bible while driving is very manageable, and much more enjoyable that listening to the same songs on the radio, over and over again. Also, Max McLean's narration is very listener friendly and his voice adds emphasis to the passages to help articulate the meaning. I listened to a couple of the free mp3 versions of the Bible available online, and I could not focus on what was said due to the unappealing sound of the narration. That is how I decided to purchase this audio Bible, and I am thankful to have found it.

I am a neophyte Christian who is trying to grow and mature in my faith. I have always wanted to read the Bible, but found that the written format requires a great amount of discipline to read and moves very slowly in some passages. I am pleased to write that the audiobook format has been a real gift. I'm new to audiobooks, but it's like being told a story... you can listen while you are working out, driving, or relaxing ... and you divide your attention while still making progress. I find the Listener's Bible makes a great companion, going back and reading portions that are especially exciting, interesting or provocative, while glossing over the historical and record-keeping aspects (i.e. parts of the Old Testament). It is a great tool for the first-time Bible reader to begin his or her study. As for the product itself, the music in the background is non-obtrusive and appropriate for the subject matter. Max McLean has a beautiful voice; it took me a little while to get used to his cadence and interpretation of the words, but now his inflections and cadence actually help me to get more from the text. This is a beautifully rendered effort and is easily worth its price. I am very pleased with my purchase and am glad to have this vehicle to mature in my faith.
