At other times he is the soul of Tevye, politely expressing  slight differences with God. . . . There are worse ways to introduce the  next generation to the Bible than to have them hear Mr. McLean speaks  with such affection of its heroes and intone, 'God called the expanse  sky,' as if sky were the most brilliant name in the world.
